Data related to "Xiao, Severson, et al. (2026) Peri-Head Distance Coding in the Mouse Brainstem"

This Dandiset contains in vivo extracellular recordings from second-order neurons in the mouse whisker brainstem (principal trigeminal nucleus - PrV) collected in awake animals during a naturalistic wall-passing paradigm designed to probe peri-head distance sensing. The dataset supports analysis of two distance-coding schemes observed in the brainstem: (1) a proximity code, in which firing rates increase monotonically as an object approaches the face, and (2) a map code, in which neurons exhibit peak tuning at specific peri-head distances, collectively tiling peri-personal space. Population-level analyses of these recordings can be used to compare decoding performance between coding schemes. In addition to baseline recordings, the dataset includes perturbation conditions intended to test circuit mechanisms underlying map-like tuning, including multi-whisker integration, local inhibition, and long-range internuclear inhibition. Data are organized in NWB format and include extracellular electrophysiology and associated stimulus annotations needed to relate neural activity to peri-head distance during wall-passing (e.g., wall/object position relative to the head and temporal alignment to ephys recording).
