Experiencias de familiares de gemelos con displasia broncopulmonar y retinopatía: estudio fenomenológico

Introduction: The premature birth of twins with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and/or retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) represents an emotional, social, and economic challenge for families. Objective: To explore and understand the lived experiences and support needs of parents of premature twins participating in a Kangaroo Mother Care Program in Bogotá, Colombia. Materials and methods: A phenomenological study was conducted with seven caregivers of premature twins participating in the KMP between 2020 and 2022. The virtual semi-structured interviews were transcribed and analyzed using content analysis (Bardin), identifying thematic categories such as emotional experience, access to health services, and family reorganization. Ethical aspects and confidentiality were ensured. Results:
Three main thematic categories emerged: emotional experience, caregiving challenges, and socioeconomic impact. These encompassed the reconfiguration of family roles, financial burden, and coping strategies such as community support. Discussion:
The findings highlight the need to adapt KMC programs for families of preterm twins, integrating continuous psychosocial support and public policies aimed at reducing the economic and logistical burdens faced by these families. Conclusion:
This study underscores the importance of an interdisciplinary and humanized approach in neonatal care that places families at the center. Future research should include larger samples and explore targeted interventions for this specific population.
