VPRS 11537 Index to Governor's Correspondence Files, Alpha-Numeric System

This index identifies correspondence files of the Superintendents Office of H.M. Prison Pentridge by subject and by number. The filing system has a three tiered (multiple number) structure which consists of a primary subject code (alpha-numeric), a secondary subject code, and occasionally a tertiary subject code.The primary subject code is denoted by an alpha-numeric prefix, and in most cases corresponds to the first letter of the primary headings, for example C1 - Catering, P5 - Prisoners. Subsequently, the index is listed in alphabetical order by primary subject code.The secondary subject code is allocated to identify secondary subjects which are subordinate to the primary subject code. For example, a file relating to Catering - Meals was classified C1/1 while Prisoners - Property was classified P5/12.When required, the tertiary subject code is allocated to indicate a finer categorisation in subject matter. For example, Catering - Meals - Menus was classified C3/1/3, and Prisoners - Property - Storage was classified P5/12/4.
