Clothes appear to be hung from the branches of a tree in the background.; Joaquin Miller -- born in September of 1837 near Liberty, Indiana as Cinncinatus Hiner Miller -- was a minor poet and friend of the satirist Ambrose Bierce. He was know to be a flagrant liar who invented intricate life stories for himself and accomplishments designed to impress.
