# **Economist Enterprise (EIU) Sustainability Index**

The economic impacts of political disruptions, labour conditions, climate impacts and the energy transition are being felt now and are growing. It’s impossible to create reliable economic forecasts without taking into account the impact of the energy transition, sustainability risk and regulations. The Sustainability Index dataset provides a unique framework, giving you easy access to comprehensive sustainability metrics with a robust methodology based on 220 indicators across 150+ countries with trend data back to 2015.

Most sustainability analysis takes place at the corporate level, assessing the impact that a company has on sustainability in the countries in which it operates. EIU’s country-level Sustainability Index goes further to consider how governments, businesses and societies affect sustainability across three dimensions: Environment, Social and Governance.

EIU’s Sustainability Index combines qualitative and quantitative indicators. Each metric is measured and scored independently, and the resulting value is transformed into a normalised score. The indicator scores are then aggregated into four categories within the three pillars to enable comparison across regions and countries.

Quantitative indicators: Each of the three Sustainability Index pillars—Environment, Social and Governance—draws on EIU’s extensive library of macroeconomic and industry datasets and forecasts, as well as data from official sources. External sources include the World Bank, the UN and the IMF. We favour data from global institutions in order to have comparable, comprehensive datasets across the maximum possible number of geographies.

Qualitative indicators: Qualitative indicators are used more extensively in the social and governance pillars, where topics are more subjective. The Sustainability Index leans on EIU’s long-standing ability to provide comparable scores for subjective issues such as democracy, with a global team of expert analysts scoring each country-level indicator independently and objectively. The comparability of qualitative assessments is ensured by the detailed guidance provided to analysts on the meaning of each score, and the rigorous process of benchmarking across countries and back-testing over time.
