The emergence and spread of mcr-1-positive Escherichia coli (MCRPEC) pose significant global health concerns. While studies have investigated MCRPEC from various sources worldwide, differences in genetic epidemiology and associated risks between MCRPEC in humans and the environment remain understudied. Here, we conducted a prospective study involving MCRPEC isolated from local wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Shanghai, China, along with fecal samples from local residents and international travelers. Our goal was to characterize MCRPEC from Shanghai's WWTPs and compare their genomes with those from human sources.
