Compounding extreme temperature, drought, flood events over European administrative regions

NetCDF datasets containing daily compound heatwave+drought (HD), coldwave+drought (CD), drought+flood (DF), heatwave+flood (HF), coldwave+flood (CD), heatwave+drought+flood (HDF) and coldwave+drought+flood (CDF) occurrences in European regions at Nomenclature of territorial units for statistics (NUTS) levels 0-3. Population weighted regionally averaged variables are added to datasets with the "daily" suffex. Variables are daily mean, minimum and maximum 2m temperature, daily mean, minimum and maximum 1000hPa relative humidity and daily sum precipitation from ERA5 reanalysis data. Population dataset is derived from 2021 census data accessed via: https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/gisco/geodata/population-distribution/population-grids. Heatwaves are defined as: 5% of a given NUTS region area with 2m temperatures above the local 95th percentile for consectuive 5 days. Coldwaves are defined as: 5% of a given NUTS region area with 2m temperatures below the local 5th percentile for consectuive 5 days. Droughts are defined as: 5% of a given NUTS region area with Standardised Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) below -2. SPEI is defined separately at 1, 3, 6 and 12 month scales. Note: The SPEI is a monthly index. Therefore we apply the monthly value to every day of the month to determine compound event occurrences at the daily scale. Flood events are taken from the Historical Analysis of Natural Hazards in Europe (HANZE) flood database and added to our determination of compounding events, Note: Since HANZE flood events are defined for NUTS level 3, flood data is only incorporated to our NUTS level 3 dataset. Datasets with the suffix "weekly" are the datasets with the suffix "daily", converted to ISO weekly date format. Datasets without the prefix "compound" offer reduced versions of the datasets with suffix "daily" - where only the occurrences of extreme events are added.
