VPRS 6908 Inwards Registered and Unregistered Correspondence Files

This series consists of correspondence received and registered at the Department of Crown Lands and Survey (VA 538). The correspondence appears to be a mixture of that originally addressed to the Surveyor - General, the Chief Commissioner of Lands or the Board of Land and Works (VA 644). For the first two officers, the correspondence was registered directly into the departmental correspondence registers (see VPRS 70 Registers of Inwards Correspondence). It is evident that correspondence addressed to the Board was originally registered in the Board' s registration system, marked with the annotation "Lands", forwarded to the Department and then re-registered within its system. Correspondence in the P2 consignment is principally to the Chief Commissioner of Crown Lands.Subjects of correspondence are to do with surveys including the trigonometrical survey, with applications for land to be surveyed, with personnel and supply matters relating to the duties of the Surveyor-General and other surveyors. Much of the correspondence also has to do with requests and applications for the sale of particular areas of land as well as reports from Crown Lands Bailiffs.Correspondence has been enclosed in cover sheets. On the sheets are noted correspondence registration numbers with those of associated correspondence if a number of pieces of related correspondence had been placed together into a file through top-numbering in the registers. Registration numbers give the year of receipt, the alphabetical designation of the register in which the registration was made and the sequential number of the piece of correspondence. Also, on the enclosure sheet was a summary of the subject of the piece of correspondence, referrals to action officers and where required, a summary of any action to be taken or any reply to the correspondent.Correspondence from the same registry systems and on similar subjects may be found in VPRS 44 Inwards Registered and Unregistered Correspondence (for the department of Crown Lands and Survey, the Surveyor-General, the Chief Commissioner of Crown Lands and the Board of Land and Works. ) and VPRS 1258 Inward Correspondence (Surveyor - General).Correspondence in the P3 consignment was returned to PROV custody in May 2006 by the Hamilton Historical Society.
