Neighbourhood Councils, Local Government and Local Community, 1998

The objective of the project was to investigate local organizations' communicative function between municipalities and local communities. The term local organization is in this study understood as encompassing neighbourhood councils, local governments and various voluntary community organizations. An inquiry into all the municipalities of Norway showed that nearly half have some form of local organization. Data was gathered from members of these organizations in nine municipalities. They were asked about why they participate, why the organization was founded, the organizations work and more. It was concluded that local organizations are vital for local democracy.
