Volcanology of Deception Island. Project No. 14 2002-2004

Abstract of project: The Deception Volcanology Observatory was created
in 1993 for the Instituto Antartico Argentino (Argentine Antarctic
Institute) and for the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas
de Espa?a (Spanish High Council of Scientific Investigations). Its
creation was in response to the reactivation of volcanoes on Decepcion
Island in 1991-1992, and the purpose of the project was to monitor the
volcanic activity present in the island. The project consisted of work
to establish volcanic vigilance across the seismic registration
present in the island, control of geothermal anomalies by soil and
water, and analysis of composition variation in fumarole gasses and
water sites on the island.

The purpose in this project will be the global evaluation of the
information obtained and finally building a model that permits
accurate predictions about the changes in the activity of this
volcanic system (i.e. its pre-eruption, or eruption). This model could
ultimately be used in the prediction of active volcanoes which have
similar characteristics to Decepcion. The project will also complete
the geologic study of the island, mainly with respect to its geologic
structures and primary and secondary pyroclastic deposits. The intent
is to create new models of pyroclastic deposition by observing the
processes in action. With the knowledge of stratigraphy and structural
geology, the project will provide new data for the geological
evolution of the island.

Volcanologia Decepcion Proyecto No. 14 Anos 2002-2004
El Observatorio Volcanologico Decepcion fue creado en 1993 por el
Instituto Antartico Argentino y el Consejo Superior de Investigaciones
Cientificas de Espana, en razon de la reactivacion volcanica de
1991-1992 y con el objeto de monitorear la actividad de la isla. El
proyecto consiste en continuar con las tareas de vigilancia volcanica
registrando la sismicidad presente en la isla, controlando anomalias
geotermicas de suelos y agua, y principalmente analizando las
variaciones composicionales de los gases fumarolianos y los cuerpos de
agua existentes en la misma. Se pretende en este proyecto llevara a
cabo la evaluacion global de la informacion obtenida con la finalidad
de desarrollar un modelo que permita predecir los cambios en el
sistema volcanico hacia una actividad pre-eruptiva o eruptiva,
pudiendo ademas ser utilizados en la prediccion de volcanes en
actividad, de caracter?sticas semejantes al de Decepcion. Se
realizara el estudio geologico de la isla, principalmente en lo que
respecta a la estructura y los depositos piroclasticos primarios y
secundarios. Se intenta generar nuevos modelos depositacionales de
rocas piroclasticas a partir de los procesos actuantes. A partir del
conocimiento acabado de la estratigrafia y la estructura se pretende
aportar nuevos datos sobre la evolucion geologica de la isla.
