Use of Digitized Radar (DR) Data in Heavy Precipitation Situations

The early morning surface analysis (Figure 1) showed a north-south cold front progressing eastward toward the eastern slopes of the Appalachian chain. Ahead of the front, showers dumped excessive rainfall in two areas. In a localized storm over the Raleigh, N.C., area from 3 to 5 inches of rain fell between midnight and 7 A.M. To the north and during the same period, eastern Pennsylvania, northern New Jersey and southeastern New York were covered by a widespread 1-6 inch rainfall.
