Improving hepatitis C treatment uptake among people who inject drugs in Australia

This research explores why many Australians with hepatitis C, especially people who inject drugs, are not starting treatment despite having access to highly effective cures. Using data from a long-term study, it found treatment delays of nearly three years due to barriers like unstable housing, stigma, and barriers within health services. Support such as transport help, financial incentives, and mobile clinics—can improve uptake. The study recommends integrating hepatitis C care into drug treatment and primary care, backed by sustainable funding and a person-centred approach to make treatment easier and more appealing when people are ready.
