This genome sequence is from a deep-sea bacterium, Hydrogenovibrio thermophilus JR-2, which has the ability to grow very quickly, despite having to make all of its biomolecules from CO2 while using compounds like poisonous hydrogen sulfide or other reduced sulfur compounds for energy. It can grow quickly despite low CO2 concentrations, and we are interested in understanding the genetic underpinnings of this capability. Annotating this genome will facilitate our efforts in using mutagenesis experiments to identify genes conferring low-CO2 growth capability, as well as incorporating these studies into undergraduate curricula.
