In connection with the low-pressure system 'Katinka', persistent and heavy precipitation occurred in the wider area, especially in the period from the 16th to 19th May 2024 which led to local flooding and further damage. Starting from the 17th May 2024 a flood event was reported affecting Saarland region in Germany. The German Weather Service (DWD) reported more than 100 liters per square meter rain in 24 hours, an exceptionally high amount of precipitation.
