Streptomyces spp. from the rhizosphere of edelweiss Genome sequencing and assembly

The genomes of 20 Streptomyces strains obtained from the rhizosphere of Leontopodium nivale subsp. alpinum were sequenced and analysed for the potential to biosynthesize secondary metabolites. Several hundred biosynthetic gene clusters were detected. Concurrently the antimicrobial activities of the strains were tested against Gram positive bacteria, Gram negative bacteria and yeast. Analysis of the bioactive extracts with LC-MS showed the presence of numerous known and several novel compounds.
