Nanoeukaryotes and picoeukaryotes play an important role in the biogenic element cycle and energy flow in marine ecosysytems. However, their biodiversity and activity are poorly studied in the South China Sea. Here, we investigated the diversity and activity of nanoeukaryotes and picoeukaryotes in the northern South China Sea using high-throughput sequencing targeting the V9 regin of 18S rDNA and rRNA.
