This dataset provides monthly average air temperature data of China at 1 km resolution, covering January to December 1996. It is developed using monthly in-situ mean air temperature records from 824 national reference and basic meteorological stations across China for the same period. After strict quality control and screening, the thin plate spline (TPS) method implemented in the ANUSPLIN software was adopted for spatial interpolation, with the national 1 km resolution digital elevation model (DEM) serving as the covariate. Consequently, monthly grid data of China's land surface with a horizontal resolution of 1 km × 1 km for January–December 1996 were produced. For storage efficiency, all data are stored as the int16 data type, with a unit of 0.1℃. Each annual dataset contains 12 data files, which are named by concatenating the year and month; for instance, 19961 corresponds to the data for January 1996. The spatial scope of this dataset includes the main land areas of China (covering Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions), excluding regions such as the South China Sea islands and reefs.
