Phytometers were installed at 18 experimental sites across 11 European countries in 2017. Three species, <i>Dactylis glomerata, Plantago lanceolata, </i>and<i> Trifolium pratense</i>, were grown from seed in a greenhouse for 8 weeks and then transplanted out into the field in the local site climate. Phytometers were planted in pots in identical planting schema (6 individuals of each species) filled with either the local soil or a standard substrate consisting of vermiculite and fertilizer. After 50 days, biomass was harvested and sorted to species. We report biomass upscaled to g m<sup>-2</sup> for ease of comparison. We also separated senesced tissue and identified the number of dead individuals recorded in the Mortality and Senescence dataset.<br>PRS Probes simulate plant nutrient uptake and were installed 10 days prior to harvest, removed at harvest time, and sent to the lab for analysis. These data are reported in the PRS dataset.<br>Local climate data was used for the 50 day field exposure and was taken from local weather stations, often installed on-site. We calculated potential evapotranspiration from this period and subtracted that from the observed precipitation during the 50 day period as a measurement of aridity. Temperature data-loggers installed 5 cm below the soil were used to calculate growing degree days (GDD) in each soil type at each site. Climate data are reported in the master spreadsheet.<br>Code for the analysis in the paper published in Ecosphere is attached.<br>
