Dataset and code for "Grid decarbonization unevenly erodes climate benefit of global hydropower"

All data and code supporting this study have been deposited in a permanent Zenodo repository. Assembling this dataset represented a substantial, multi-year undertaking: it required the systematic compilation, cross-validation, and manual curation of engineering and environmental records for over 10,000 hydropower stations worldwide, drawn from disparate national registries, global databases, and the published literature, and harmonised through considerable effort into a single reproducible inventory. Given the significant investment this collection represents, and to safeguard against any premature disclosure of unpublished findings ahead of formal publication, we have kept the repository private under a share-by-invitation basis rather than posting it openly at this stage. We would, however, be glad to provide full access to the editorial team and reviewers at any point during the review process. Large third-party raw datasets that are publicly downloadable from their original providers are not included in this archive. The section **External data not included in this archive** lists those inputs and the local paths expected by the rebuild scripts. Data-minimization note: `hydropower_station_master_20260611.xlsx` is a reduced, study-derived station master for reproducibility. Workbook structure and column headers are retained, but columns not used by the current rebuild and figure code were replaced with `-` before deposition. The intermediate workbooks `engineering_completed.xlsx` and `station_land_cover_SSP*.xlsx` are intentionally omitted; they are generated by the End-to-End Data Flow below.
