Data for MA thesis: "The spread of the cult of Attis in the Roman Empire: Analysis of regional variations"

This repository contains the datasets used in the MA thesis: The Spread of the Cult of Attis in the Roman Empire: Analysis of Regional Variations. The repository contains the following data: 1. Geocoded Latin inscriptions collected from the LIST dataset (Vojtěch Kaše, Petra Heřmánková, & Adéla Sobotková. (2024). LIST (v1.2) [Data set]. Zenodo. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10473706). The inscriptions mention the deities Attis, Magna Mater (or Cybele), Minerva, Mithras, Hecate, Asclepius, Apollo, Sol, Diana, and Aelia. Geocordinates in this dataset are primarily retrieved from from original geocoordinates in EDCS Epigraphik-Datenbank Clauss / Slaby and Epigraphic Database Heidelberg. File: ListAttisWKTv1_2.csv The dataset includes both original columns from LIST and custom-added columns created for the purpose of the thesis: archeo – originally within „province“, then placed in a separate column for the purpose of leaving names of provinces separately for further analysis dating_yes – dating information in the form of YES or NO name_variants_attis – variants of the name Attis epithets – epithets present in the inscriptions which_magna_mater – clarification of the form of the name of Magna Mater in the inscription magna_mater_yes – presence of Magna Mater in form YES or NO other_deities_names – names of other deities mentioned other_deities_yes – presence of other deities type_of_inscription_all – typology of the inscription (votive/funerary/other) 2. Dataset of iconographic evidence related to Attis from the cult of Magna Mater, derived from the Ubi Erat Lupa database (“Ubi Erat Lupa”, https://lupa.at/search). This dataset was made by looking up the name Attis in the title and in the iconography. File: Attis_iconography_Lupa.csv The dataset includes both original fields from the Lupa database and custom-added columns created for the thesis: province – originally within „ancient_finding_place“, then placed in a separate column for the purpose of leaving names of provinces separately for further analysis archeo – originally within „ancient_finding_place“, then placed in a separate column for unified type of information in both iconographical and epigraphical dataset dating_yes – dating information in the form of YES or NO raw_dating – combination of columns “dating_from” and “dating_to” funerary_yes – presence of funerary context object_type – typology of the object, but funerary types only (e.g., grabbau, grabaltar, etc.) The data was collected and annotated in 2024 and 2025 for the purpose of analyzing regional variations in the representation and spread of the cult of Attis in the Roman Empire.
