Average annual frequency of high tide events in Venice 1966-2018, by water level

Astronomical tides, combined with meteorological phenomena, such as seasonal winds, often cause floods in the Venetian Lagoon. Between 1966 and 2018, Venice was flooded on average 67 times a year. This figure considers all tide events where the water level exceeded the flood threshold level of 80 cm. Over the period under consideration, the water level exceeded 170 cm only once: during the 1966 tide, it reached a peak of 194 cm above sea level. In November 2019, Venice experienced another record tide, with a water level of 187 cm.
