The prevalence of "three highs" has led to a rise in the utilization of fish oil softgels as a frequently employed pharmaceutical and health-care commodity. Fish oil softgels typically contain polyunsaturated fatty acids, which possess a susceptibility to light-induced decomposition, instability in the presence of humidity and heat, and a propensity for oxidation and degradation. It is worth noting that gelatin is commonly employed as the softgel capsule material in commercially available fish oil softgels. When soft capsules containing gelatin as the capsule material are stored for extended periods, they are susceptible to oil seepage, adhesion, and multiple oxidation of their contents. Consequently, this leads to inadequate disintegration and delayed drug dissolution, resulting in substandard performance. Therefore, new capsule materials are needed to replace gelatin soft capsules. In this paper, the advantages and disadvantages of soft capsule,preparation technology and quality research content were introduced in detail, and the latest development of fish oil soft gelatin capsule was reviewed, and the feasibility of improving it into plant soft capsule with pullulan polysaccharide, carrageenan and modified starch as capsule material was reviewed in order to provide reference for the development and application of new fish oil plant soft capsule.
