The leaf surface of fresh vegetables is a newly recognized habitat hosting diverse and abundant microbial populations with the potential to influence food quality and human health through the food-gut axis. We investigated the ecology of the phyllosphere bacterial and fungal microbiota of green and red lettuces (n=143) collected over a 12-months using high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA and ITS regions.
