The identification of DOBV in the yellow-necked mouse from the mountain province of Udine, bordering Austria and Slovenia is the first virological confirmation that follows serological evidences collected in both rodents and humans since 2000. The study shows also that longitudinal surveillance in wildlife for zoonotic pathogens is a powerful tool allowing for the early detection of increasing risk for human infections.
