Resistance to the antibiotics chloramphenicol, nitrofurantoin and streptomycin were generated in E. coli K-12 substr. MG1655 via the soft agar gradient evolution system (SAGE). We identified that the fitness costs of antibiotic resistance impede the evolution of resistance to other antibiotics.
