This series comprises the documentation collected or created by the Public Bodies Review Committee (VA 3093) in the course of inquiries held to determine whether a nominated public body should cease to exist.Public bodies can be nominated for review by the committee as a result of either a resolution of either House of Parliament or by an order of the Governor-in-Council. Reviews are conducted with respect to a number of factors set out in S.48c(5) of the Parliamentary Committees (Public Bodies Review Committee) Act 1980. These include whether the objects of the body are worth pursuing in contemporary society, whether the body's operations are in the public interest and whether activities are conducted in an efficient, economical and effective manner.ContentsA range of documents was either created or collected by the Committee in the course of each inquiry. Although the range of documents created per inquiry will vary, the following broad categories of documents were generally created during all or most of them:-Background papers comprising copies of printed material, reports etc gathered by the Committee in the course of initial research about the body to be reviewed.Correspondence files relating to either the actual investigation or organisational aspects of the inquiry.Submissions tended by individuals or organisations during the investigation stating their views on the issues concerned. Some submissions were also received in response to public hearings or issue of the final report.Transcripts of public hearings which must be held as part of each inquiry. Copies of the transcripts, which were forwarded to the various participants for amendments or corrections are also included.Reports including the final printed copy as presented to Parliament containing the Committee's findings and recommendations and reports made by consultants for the Committee.Minutes of meetings in which matters pertaining to these inquires were discussed by Committee members (units 1-2 of the P3 consignment).
