The polyamine deficient strains co-translationally degrade the RpoS transcription factor. These strains have undetectable levels of RpoS in the absence of polyamines and the levels can be restored upon addition of spermidine and putrescine. This mimics the situation in wild-type strains with hyper proofreading ribosomes where RpoS levels are lower than in regular strains.
