Replication Data for: Follow the leader: the European Commission, the European Court of Justice, and the EU’s rule of law revolution

Please read this README file before running replication files.To make replication a smoother process, this replication folder contains 10 different datasets that serve specific purposes, from raw data to analysis up to data visualization. There are three main raw data files that are used for performing the detection of legal basis innovations:1) "ecj_rol_dec_analysis_oct23.csv" - This dataset contains the decision-level attributes for performing the analysis.2) "output_main2_citations_oct23.csv" - This dataset contains the citation-level attributes for performing the analysis.Leveraging these aforementioned datasets, we obtained two new datasets that contain the results of our algorithmic and coding processing. It is key to have different levels of analysis to have a piecewise assessment of legal innovations in the ECJ. That is, looking at decisions on their own, we can capture the locus of innovation at a text level at the exact date when it was issued. Conversely, by looking at cases, we can assess a degree of centrality (or clustering effect) of innovation across particular cases irrespective of fine-grain decision patterns.3) "ecj_rol_decision_legal_innovations_oct23.csv" - This dataset contains legal innovations and related features at the decision level.4) "ecj_rol_case_legal_innovations_oct23.csv" - This dataset contains legal innovations and related features at the case level.Lastly, we also included five additional datasets that were created using our analysis datasets to make data visualization more intuitive for people looking to replicate this work.5) fig2_data.csv6) fig4_data.csv7) fig5_data.csv8) fig6_data.csv9) figa2_data.csv10) ecj_rol_legal_innovations_and_ec_proposals_feb24.csvNote: "fig4_ecj_teleological_innov_v2.png" was also included in the "figures" directory as a separate file since arrows were added with a third party tool.
