The drought regions are designed to assist the DEP in declaring drought warnings and emergencies in New Jersey during times of decreased precipitation, and current or anticipated water-supply shortages. By having different regions it is possible for the State to declare drought warnings or emergencies in different regions. These warnings and emergencies are declared by the Governor of the State of New Jersey. The State's response to a drought is coordinated by the NJDEP Water Supply Administration.
