NASA Research Under Project Quasi-crystalline Undercooled Alloys for Space Investigation (QUASI) and ESA-Based Investigations, THERMOLAB-ISS and ICOPROSOL

The primary objectives are:
1. Investigations of nucleation of crystal phases from supercooled (metastable) liquids as a function of stirring (fluid-flow) conditions. Systematic studies of this under terrestrial conditions are not possible due to the presence of convective flow in the liquid.
2. Measurements of thermophysical properties of metallic liquids under microgravity conditions, including the specific heat, viscosity, surface tension. These are then compared with measurements made under terrestrial conditions, when possible. These data are important for the analysis of the nucleation data, fluid flow calculations; additionally they are important for understanding fundamental connections between liquid dynamics and structure.
