The Departmental Fragility Index (DFI): Measuring Output Concentration and Structural Vulnerability

The Departmental Fragility Index (DFI) is a novel methodology designed to quantify the concentration of scholarly output within academic departments and measure their reliance on individual "Keystone Faculty." By evaluating six distinct dimensions of vulnerability - including Jackknife departure sensitivity, Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) concentration, budgetary reliance, collaboration bottlenecks, and retirement risk - the DFI calculates a composite 0-to-100 fragility score for each discipline. This Open Science repository provides the fully anonymized, privacy-compliant public dataset alongside the complete R analysis pipeline required to replicate these calculations and identify critical structural risks in academia.
