Cytokine data were derived from nasal lavage fluid (NLF), nasal epithelial lining fluid (NELF), sputum, and circulating serum samples collected from 14 non-smokers, 13 cigarette smokers, and 17 e-cigarette users. Cytokine profiles were evaluated for correlation across compartments in paired samples. An unsupervised machine learning approach was utilized to assess whether cluster-based analyses could yield more sensitivity than individual cytokine comparisons when determining differences between compartments and tobacco use groups.
