Within the Periphyllus genus, pseudogenisation of the riboflavin, and other essentail nutrients, biosynthetic genes in the Periphyllus' Buchnera last common ancestor rendered Buchnera unable to supply these essential nutrients to the aphid, and thus triggered the establishment of secondary co-obligate endosymbionts. Through co-occurrence data of same-haplotype secondary endosymbionts across different populations, we determined that Periphyllus testudinaceus apparently harbours a Serratia symbiotica symbiont as Buchnera's co-obligate endosymbiont. This population was also found to be infected by a facultative Hamiltonella defensa symbiont and its associated APSE phage.
