The goal of this study is to obtain new information about the metabolism of organisms as a function of biogeochemical environment, to reinforce emerging patterns that link organisms to specific conditions and other community members, to uncover syntrophic interactions, and to give unprecedented new insight into how microbial function maps onto newly resolved taxonomic structures in the bacterial and archaeal domains.
