Toxic schools: proximity to polluted sites in 17 low- and middle-income countries — replication package

Replication package for: Crawfurd, L. (2026). "Toxic schools: proximity to polluted sites in 17 low- and middle-income countries." Combines geocoded data on 2,840 contaminated sites from the Pure Earth Toxic Sites Identification Program (TSIP) with the locations of approximately 2,723,000 schools across 17 countries. Finds that 171,348 schools (6.3%) are within 5 km of a known polluted site. Contents: Python replication code (17 numbered scripts), Stata and R cross-language replication scripts, raw school census data (EMIS) for 11 countries, Overture Maps / OpenStreetMap school locations for 6 countries, TSIP pollution site data (March 2026 version), Meta Relative Wealth Index data, satellite PM2.5 data, government contaminated site registers (India CPCB, Brazil CETESB, Mexico RETC, Peru MINEM), and all generated tables and figures.
