Microplastics (MPs) in the aquatic environment serve as ideal carriers for the attachment of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and pathogens, which has attracted worldwide attention. However, the viable fractions on MPs, which are major contributors to the prevalence and dissemination of AMR, remains poorly understood. In this study, Propidium monoazide (PMA)-combined high-throughput quantitative PCR and amplicon sequencing were conducted to target the viable antibiotic resistome and microbial communities on three types of MPs from an urban river.
