A temporary council for the Shire of Dumaresq was appointed in 1906 under s.7 (a) of the Local Government (Shires) Act 1905 (Act No. 33, 1905) and held its first meeting on 16 June 1906 at the Court House in Armidale. This council made all the necessary arrangements and preparations for the election of the first Dumaresq Shire Council, which first met on 8 December 1906.This series contains the handwritten minutes of the Works Committee of the Dumaresq Shire Council. This committee issued policies and decisions on all matters pertaining to roads, building and construction.The minutes were created at least once per month and record inward and outward correspondence received by the Works Committee, motions put to the committee and other relevant items of business. They document the variety of activities for which the committee was responsible, including engineer’s reports, tenders, road maintenance and repair, building and maintenance of council property, purchase of plant equipment and town planning.
