Identification of microbial communities associated with Mn(II) oxidation within caves of the southern Appalachian Mountains. Samples were taken before sites were amended with various carbon sources to enhance biotic Mn(II) oxidation. Microbial Mn(II) oxidation has the potential to be used a an indicator of exogenous carbon input in systems that are generally considered oligotrophic.
