Despite its importance to energy flow and nutrient cycling, the process of plant root decomposition has received comparatively little detailed research. Here, DNA-based stable isotope probing (DNA-SIP) and Illumina MiSeq sequencing were employed to characterize the dynamics and diversity of bacterial populations actively assimilating C derived from rice root labeled at 90% 13C for 90 days.
