This study reports findings from a natural experiment comparing two commonly used active learning approaches—role-play and case-based learning—designed to develop undergraduate students’ competencies in corporate social responsibility (CSR) communication. Using a mixed-methods experimental design, multi-week online modules were delivered to undergraduate students in Thailand (N = 109), who engaged in either role-play or case-based learning activities. Quantitative analyses indicated that although both pedagogies positively influenced students’ sustainability-related mindsets, neither approach produced mastery-level gains in CSR communication knowledge, and no significant differences emerged between the pedagogies. To better understand these results, qualitative analysis of student reflections was conducted. Sentiment analysis revealed that students struggled with the student-centered and team-based demands of both pedagogies when implemented fully online.
