Fibre optic technologies for dense monitoring and quantification of volcanic events (INFRADAS)

From July to September 2019, a dense seismic array consisting of 26 broadband stations (Trillium Compact 120s) was deployed across a flat area near the eruptive vents of Mount Etna in Sicily, with 4 additional stations installed close to the summit. The array was installed in the vicinity of the vents to validate dynamic strain measurements obtained from fibre-optic cables. The primary objective was to demonstrate the applicability of distributed dynamic strain sensing for volcano monitoring and to evaluate its performance in comparison with conventional seismic sensors. Waveform data is available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 3I.
