Indigenous Land and Sea Interests

Land that is owned or managed by Australia’s Indigenous communities, or over which Indigenous people have use and rights, was compiled from information supplied by Australian, state and territory governments and other statutory authorities with Indigenous land and sea management interests. Indigenous land and sea interests was comprised of: \na)\tIndigenous tenure for Australia (Aboriginal Reserve, Aboriginal Deed of Grant, Aboriginal Freehold Land (inalienable and alienable), Aboriginal Local Government Lease, Aboriginal held lease (other than pastoral), Aboriginal held pastoral lease, Multi feature Aboriginal freehold – National Parks) (1,105,992 km2);\nb)\tIndigenous Protected Areas IPAs including sea country (684,124 km2);\nc)\tNative title outcomes for areas within determinations\na.\texclusive possession (851,117 km2), and \nb.\tnon-exclusive possession (1,500,776 km2) ;\nd)\tCollaborative Australian Protected Areas Database 2014 – (Aboriginal Areas, and National Park Aboriginal) – (16,790 km2).\nNote 1: overlaps have been removed between tenure types (a-d). \nNote 2: Registered native title claims (yet to be determined) and Indigenous Land Use Agreements (ILUAs) are excluded\n\nLineage: See attached supporting document.
