Transmission electron tomographic datasets of hippocampal synapses for the control and LTP were acquired from hippocampal slices of male Long-Evans rats. The tilt images were taken at 1 degree tilt interval to about ± 60 degrees along a single tilt axis. The alignment of each set of tilt-images and volume reconstruction of the images were carried out by using the unified software package for electron tomography, EM3D (em3d.org). There are five different kinds of files: (1) a raw dataset of unaligned tilt transmission EM images (*.mrc); (2) a binary file composed of aligned tilt images and reconstructed volume (*.data); (3) a state file that contains all the information with respect to the binary file (*.xml); (4) a reconstructed volume dataset (*_rec.mrc); (5) an image selected from the reconstructed volume dataset (*.jpg).
