The reform strategy of vocational education in China has significantly enriched the country's talent development frameworks and has contributed to the high-quality, sustainable advancement of Chinese society. On the basis of the panel data of 30 provinces in China spanning the period from 2008 to 2020, this paper investigates the impact, spillover effects, nonlinear relationships, and the connection of higher vocational education (HVE) and green total factor energy efficiency (GTFEE) exhibits regional heterogeneity. Findings suggests that not only the scale but also the quality of HVE have a positive influence on GTFEE, with the magnitude of this impact varying across regions, particularly showing the strongest effect in the central part of the country. Among all factors, only on GTFEE does the scale of HVE have a positive impact of spatial spillover, as indicated by the spatial Durbin model. Furthermore, the impact of HVE on GTFEE demonstrates a threshold effect contingent upon labor misallocation and government environmental attention.
