Compositional and functional differences in gut bacteria exist between adults with normal and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and type 2 diabetes and can change with dietary factors. This randomized, parallel design, controlled feeding study examined if the gut microbiome differs between adults with isolated impaired fasting glucose (IFG), isolated IGT or those with both (IFG+IGT) and whether the glycemic index (GI) of the diet or addition of the antioxidant N-acetylcysteine (NAC) to a high GI diet impacts gut microbial communities.
