The evolutionary relationship between the pentaradial symmetry of echinoderms and the ancestral bilateral symmetry is unclear. To resolve this issue, we generated a RNA tomography dataset of a juvenile sea star (Patiria miniata). This revealed the spatial transcriptional landscape of a pentaradial animal and its spatial regulatory logic. In addition, this RNA tomography dataset is a valuable ressource to explore gene expression profile in the adult body plan of sea stars.
