Lands marginal for grain production are an important component of many landscapes and some are potential resources for biofuel cropping systems. The soil microbiome is thought to be important to make this cropping system sustainable with low input costs. We used deep sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene and soil properties from samples collected at 0-10 cm, 10-25 cm, 25-50 cm and 50-100 cm from six marginal land sites in Wisconsin and Michigan to assess the bulk soil bacteria community structure.
