Stream Buffer 50ft

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), through its Environmental Protection Division (EPD), requires a protected buffer zone along both sides of perennial streams under its Stream Corridor Criteria for Small Water Supply Watersheds. This rule generally mandates that a minimum 100-foot vegetated buffer be maintained horizontally from the stream’s wrested vegetation line on each side, creating a protected corridor intended to safeguard water quality, reduce erosion and sedimentation, filter pollutants, moderate stream temperature, and preserve natural habitat. This map shows a 50ft buffer. Within this buffer, land-disturbing activities such as grading, clearing, or construction are heavily restricted or prohibited, with only limited exceptions for approved crossings, utilities, or specific public interest projects that meet strict regulatory standards. The purpose of this protected stream corridor is to ensure the long-term protection of drinking water sources and the ecological integrity of small water supply watersheds throughout Georgia.
