Twelve stratigraphic pollen samples were collected from Layer IV in Trench 16 as part of
archaeological investigations at the Pago School in Samoa. Layer IV represents clay sediment
accumulation between 114 and more than 245 cm below the surface. Radiocarbon ages for this
layer span an interval from approximately AD 675-990 to slightly after AD 1160-1300. Pollen
analysis of these stratigraphic samples was undertaken to examine prehistoric vegetation in this
area. In addition, two samples from Trenches 20 and 22 were collected for macrofloral analysis,
also to address prehistoric vegetation. A radiocarbon age of 180 BP is reported for the organic
deposit in Trench 20.
