VPRS 15792 Files, Small Improved Holdings Act 1906

The Small Improved Holdings Act 1906 was passed with the professed aims of assisting "deserving persons to acquire small improved holdings in rural districts" becoming producers and aiding in economic development. Crown land and land acquired for Closer Settlement was subdivided into allotments which were improved and cultivated under the supervision of an appointed foreman.The files in this series illustrate the administrative procedures of the scheme containing application forms, references, foreman's reports and correspondence and records of advances.This Act was repealed in 1909 with some sections being incorporated into the Closer Settlement Act 1909. Remaining settlers under the scheme, if they had met the conditions were able to take out a conditional purchase lease for their allotments, under the terms and conditions of that Act.
